About Us

Hello there!  This is our little family!  My name is Lydia and I am the cake designer and baker.  My wonderful husband is Michael and this is our little cakelet, Ociana.  I am an at home baker who loves what I do, make cake!

It all started back in July of '09 when I was pregnant, I wanted a cute cake and figured I could do it myself, who knew how hard that would be, at eight months pregnant.  I knew I had to learn a lot but my first belly cake came out okay.  After that, I began to really respect cake artists and their work.  Its not as easy as it looked but I was eager to learn.  I wanted to learn everything there was about making cakes. I wanted to be a stay at home mom with my daughter, I didn't want to miss out on anything; so I quit my regular job and I figured I could make cakes for family and friends.  Well that was short lived and word of mouth spread and in January 2011 we launched on Facebook and created a web page, Sculpted Sweets was born!  Who knew we would take off and gain so many wonderful customers!  I absolutely love it! So yes, I am self-taught and take instructional classes in person when I can and keep up with the times on various methods and have watched numerous tutorial videos. I have my current Food Handlers certificate and the Voluntary Safe Food Handlers for Cottage Food Operators.

I call my husband our Cake Boss since he is my fondant master (plus he's Italian), lol! He covers most of the cakes that I bake and I do all of the detailing on them.  We are self-taught but I have since taken various classes to keep up with the times and learn new techniques. I try to learn something new every day.  Our daughter is in training already but we don't let her touch orders just yet. She does love to help when we let her in the kitchen, with our own meals, lol!

I've always loved to cook and bake, its been a passion for years.  My background is actually Early Childhood Education, I have my Bachelors degree in that but would love to pursue Culinary Arts or a Pastry School some day to gain more knowledge.  My husband has a Mechanical Engineering Degree which helps with construction of the cakes. I love that I can be at home with my daughter right now and also do something I love.  Who knows, we just might open a bakery someday! Thats the big dream but right now this works and we love it! We hope you let us create something wonderful for your special event, from our family to yours.

Something you might not know is that In the past, in Texas, it was illegal to run a "food establishment" from a residential kitchen, even if your product was low-risk baked foods like cakes and cookies.  You could not have a legal home bakery.  A group of dedicated home bakers changed that in 2011. SB 81 was signed into law by Governor Rick Perry on June 17, 2011.  Source:  http://www.texascottagefoodlaw.com
